Crown Athletics Cross Country – Mileage Tracker

2012 was our first year participating in the Crown Athletics Cross Country team.  We were thoroughly impressed with the coaches, the runners, the parents, and the entire experience.  My oldest daughter ran last year but our plan is for all four of our older kids to participate in the 2013 season.  The head Coach (Howard Brummel) ended the season by requesting that all of the kids log their running hours during the off-season so they will be prepared for a successful 2013 season (and so they can stay healthy and fit through the winter).  To help my kids meet this goal we have decided to start running together as a family. Purchasing land – our story

My wife and I have always dreamed of purchasing land (2 or 3 acres of private, beautiful land was our goal) but the land we could afford was either way out in the boonies or not ideal.  For example, we found a 3 acre plot in 2011 that we loved at first sight but once we got our hands on the plat information we discovered that the majority of the lot’s land was in a flood plain.  The land was affordable and it was the last lot available in a built out large-estate-lots neighborhood but it was the last lot available for a reason.  The old adage…”if it seems too good to be true”..was right on.  We eventually abandoned the idea of purchasing that lot and went back to enjoying life on our fifth of an acre lot. Home Designer Architectural 2012 Review and Screenshots

Shortly after we closed on our land purchase we began dreaming about what our future home might look like.  We tried sketching out plans on paper and we tried some free online options but we usually just ended up frustrated and irritable after a short session of working on our new home design.

I finally decided we should consider investing some money in a decent home design application for our computer.  I did the research, starting with TopTenReviews.com. Continue reading Home Designer Architectural 2012 Review and Screenshots

YouVersion – Best Bible App

I am an extremely busy father of 5 and taking the time to write a post on a Bible app is not something I ever thought I would find myself doing…yet here I am, excited to write this post. Why? I have been a Christian for many years now but up until recently I had never read the entire Bible “cover to cover.” I tried many times throughout the last 20+ years but never made it more than a few chapters before I got distracted with something else and lost sight of my goal. Lesson 006 – “Not Bad” versus “Good”

I realized while I was traveling for business this week and thinking about my family that my kids have fallen for a common trap that frequently derails people from their best future.  The phrase I frequently hear lately is “Not bad”.  Let me give you some examples of not bad versus good,

Why can’t we listen to that song…it’s “Not Bad“!
or
Why can’t we watch that movie..its “Not Bad“!
The problem with “Not Bad” is that it is not the same as “GoodContinue reading Lesson 006 – “Not Bad” versus “Good”

Lesson 004 – Bare Necessities

This weeks life lesson comes from page 27 of the book “10-Minute Life Lessons for Kids”.

This lesson is basically a lesson in “what is really important”.  According to the author, it will “help you talk with your family about establishing priorities with your time, your focus, and your finances.  It will also help you discuss making wise choices and creating balance in life.” Continue reading Lesson 004 – Bare Necessities

Lesson 003 – Switch Tasking (or Multitasking) is Worse than a Lie

Today’s lesson is in response to me witnessing how many interruptions my wife currently tolerates during a typical day of homeschool.  I don’t know how she keeps from going crazy and based on a book I read this week I think there might be a better way.

The book was given to me by my last project manager and it’s called “The Myth of Multitasking” (How “Doing it All” gets Nothing done). Continue reading Lesson 003 – Switch Tasking (or Multitasking) is Worse than a Lie
